Gastropods are a class within the phylum mollusca and include animals such as slugs and snails. They are univalves with a single spiral shell, however, many have adapted to lose the shell within its life cycle. The students worked with aquatic snails and used a grid sheet to count the number of grids that it moved in five minutes. Then converted grid squares to inches and calculated inches per one minute. The next step was to use a conversion chart of inches per minute to mph. The most common speed was .009 miles per hour. That is slow! Many students created a time lapse of their snail with their ipad.
