Red Onion Cell

In class we have been identifying the organelles in a plant cell and their functions. To bring this to life the students prepared their own slides using the skin of the red onion. They are able to identify the cell wall, membrane, cytoplasm, and the nucleus. They problem solve on the discovery of no chloroplast in the cell. A discussion exposes that the onion grows underground,so it doesn’t contain this organelle, but the green plant that grows above will go through the process of photosynthesis and feed the plant.
