In class we have been discussing types of transport methods such as diffusion, osmosis and active transport. These transports allow molecules to pass the cell membrane. In this lab, the students are investigating osmosis, the diffusion of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane. Groups of students prepare balloons with different types of extract inside. The molecules of extract will transport through the pores of the balloon and will enable the students to smell the extract outside of the balloon. Each child makes predictions of the scent as they sniff their way around the stations!
