Do earthworms have the ability to react to stimuli? Students have been studying the characteristics of the earthworm and test a hypothesis based on the knowledge that the earthworm has a nervous system. They test if the worm will respond to white, blue and red light. Will it try to approach or retreat from the light? The students also set up a test to see if the earthworm responds to a wet environment versus a dry one. The most interesting test was to place the worm on the dorsal side and observe if it rolls to the right or left to get back on the ventral side. After many trials, it can be determined if it is left or right ‘handed.’ The class data is collected, analyzed and the students write their conclusions.
