My students have been raising monarch butterflies in the classroom and following through the instars until the pupa state. We had four teams of larva monitors this year and they searched the garden each week for eggs or larva. The students raised their own larvae and kept the container clean and fed the larva each day. The students collected information in their science notebook and we kept a data table on the wall. They will analyze the data collected and work up percentages for female vs. male, and monarch vs. queen butterfly. All of the monarchs will be tagged and released into the migration.
