Bear Osmosis

Students discover the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane in this fun experiment using gummy bears. I love this inquiry based lab because the students use so many tools and process skills in addition to watching the children enjoy it so much. Selectively permeable means that some molecules can move through the membrane while others cannot. This movement through membranes is referred to as transport. The students have been working with passive transport through a variety of activities. Their hypothesis is to predict the growth for height or width in percentages. They use calculators to analyze percentages and also calculate class averages.
