Mold Growth

Students set up a mold experiment and picked a variable to test, light or temperature. After researching characteristics of mold, the children write their hypothesis based on the variable they picked. They followed the procedure sheet and prepared their bread with moisture to give the mold spores a food source and habitat. These bags will be undisturbed for three weeks to allow for mold growth.  Mold is a fungi that creates multicellular threadlike filaments of hyphae. A network of this branching hyphae is called mycellium which is responsible for gaining energy. Mold is a heterotroph and the mycellium is the digestive system gathering food. This food is converted into energy for both sexual and asexual reproduction.
