Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans in the order ‘decapod’ meaning ten+foot. As we finish our journey through arthropods, we notice many similarities between them. The exoskeleton, jointed legs, segmented body, antennae, and carapace are just a few. The students observed a preserved specimen of a crayfish and followed through their independent lab observing all of the physical characteristics. This guided them through all the external components of the anatomy that the crayfish uses for obtaining energy, protection from predators and reproduction. The movement of the swimmerets, jointed legs, chilepeds, and maxillipeds (mouth parts) were easy to observe.
